Crack stability in rate sensitive ceramics and their rate dependence
نویسنده
چکیده
The crack stability condition in rate sensitive brittle materials is analysed. The analysis shows that a crack begins to extend before a maximum load ( P , , ) appears in fracture toughness (XI) tests and the extension depends on the n-value in the relation. This suggests that the evaluation of a true KI;value is quite difficult. An analytical method for using the KT. -value (the lnltlal stress intensity evaluated by the Pma, and initial crack length) is proposed. Experimental data for an alumina ceramlc and a glass are analysed by the method. The K I ~ T ~ relation of the glass consists of 4 regions over the range s < ~ ~ 1 0 ~ s where Tf is the time to failure.

Cohesive crack with rate-dependent opening and viscoelasticity: I. mathematical model and scaling
The time dependence of fracture has two sources: (1) the viscoelasticity of material behavior in the bulk of the structure, and (2) the rate process of the breakage of bonds in the fracture process zone which causes the softening law for the crack opening to be rate-dependent. The objective of this study is to clarify the differences between these two influences and their role in the size effec...

Some aspects of thetmal fracture mechanics of ceramics with temperature-dependent properties are studied. It is first shown that the square-root singular field still prevaiLY in the crack tip region. However, the size of the K-dominant zone may be influenced by the effect of temperature-dependent properties. Then the steady thetmal stress intensity factor in an edge-cracked strip is calculated....
متن کاملMechanisms of fatigue-crack propagation in ductile and brittle solids
The mechanisms of fatigue-crack propagation are examined with particular emphasis on the similarities and differences between cyclic crack growth in ductile materials, such as metals, and corresponding behavior in brittle materials, such as intermetallics and ceramics. This is achieved by considering the process of fatiguecrack growth as a mutual competition between intrinsic mechanisms of crac...
متن کاملSubcritical crack growth law and its consequences
For brittle failures, the probability distribution of structural strength and lifetime are known to be Weibullian, in which case the knowledge of the mean and standard deviation suffices to determine the loading or time corresponding to a tolerable failure probability such as 10−6. Unfortunately, this is not so for quasibrittle structures, characterized by material inhomogeneities that are not ...
متن کاملRepeated crack healing in MAX-phase ceramics revealed by 4D in situ synchrotron X-ray tomographic microscopy.
MAX phase materials are emerging as attractive engineering materials in applications where the material is exposed to severe thermal and mechanical conditions in an oxidative environment. The Ti2AlC MAX phase possesses attractive thermomechanical properties even beyond a temperature of 1000 K. An attractive feature of this material is its capacity for the autonomous healing of cracks when opera...
